Jul 23, 2009 - i think THIS has to be my fav anime movie our of all of them...it's so enchantingly made by Kon-san, and the visual effects set off an emotional reaction that i am never able to supress, not matter how many times i watch this film. I always cry. Wonderfull work Satoshi Kon-san!

birdance Says:

Aug 23, 2009 - its a passable affair--giving it credit. after the interesting opening sequence, the show plummets into orchestared mush. a paper thin story line not helped by equally thin reason behind the lead's motivation. if Spirited Away were this pale, if Whisper of the Heart were this haphazardly told, if Umi Ga Kikoeru were lacking in such charm and humour of realism...we would severly be in trouble. thankfully they are not. they are classics. Setsuko Hara? I doubt if her life could have been so pale.

KKoga06 Says:

Aug 27, 2009 - What!? You obviously don't understand the movie! This movie is far from 'pale'! I think it's equal to or better then Spirited Away.

IamMeHere2See Says:

Aug 30, 2009 - Well, I watched it the whole way through. Was it a good movie? Yes. Was it well written? Oh, definitely yes. Visually appealing? Yes, it was very nicely drawn. Is it as good as Spirited Away? . . . No. Regardless of all that was previously mentioned, I just couldn't get that emotionally involved in this movie and couldn't connect with the charaters. The message I got from this story is that there really is only one love story, told over and over a little differently each time. Thumbs?

IamMeHere2See Says:

Aug 30, 2009 - Thank you, christy2086, for posting this and introducing me to Studio MadHouse. I'll have to look at some more of Satoshi Kon's works.

dlwke2 Says:

Oct 13, 2009 - You obviously didn't understand the movie, which is about the power of hope and NOT about a specific love story between two people. Perhaps you'd be better off sticking with the more simplistic, straight-forward kiddie movies with all the empty, meaningless cutesy fluff that you get from Spirited Away and other Miyazaki films.

dlwke2 Says:

Oct 13, 2009 - Your comment shows you failed to grasp that the movie is about hope and not about a straightforward plot or a particular love story between two people. It's just as well that you stick to the empty fluff of the Miyazaki movies. Those simpler, more straightforward films (like Spirited Away) should be easier for you to follow and should make you think a bit less, especially if you're under 16 years old, which, judging from the faux-erudite and dense manner in which you write, it seems you are.

IamMeHere2See Says:

Oct 13, 2009 - Okay, you obviously have an fanatical attachment to this movie. I judged it both from an analytical and a personal stance--how well composed it is and the reaction it got out of me. With regard to the later, this "power of hope" message fails when I don't understand why the main character continues to pursue this painter. (No, I am not a believer of love at first sight. If I did I'd be married twice over by now.)

IamMeHere2See Says:

Oct 13, 2009 - So maybe it's just not my kind of movie. But since you seem to understand it so well, dlweke2, can you tell me, if I were to watch it again, what should I pay attention to? I'm not trained to see what you see.

shusteeca89 Says:

Dec 1, 2009 - Loved this film when it came out. Like the message, "its not the things you are looking for in life, but the trip that you take to find it."

bag0k Says:

Dec 17, 2009 - I'm sick and tired of people using Spirited Away as a yardstick for anime movies. Quit masturbating to Miyazaki and expand your horizons, people.

parallaxengine Says:

Dec 18, 2009 - most people dont have time to watch that much anime and miyazaki's films are easy to follow and pretty much accessible to everyone, so whats wrong with that?

bag0k Says:

Dec 19, 2009 - Oh, I don't know, It's like using The Lion King to critique Citizen Kane. It's up to you if you want to watch kids movies your whole life, but that doesn't make you a scholar.

parallaxengine Says:

Dec 19, 2009 - i guess i'm not cut out to be an anime scholar then :)

AppleSouffle Says:

Dec 29, 2009 - You have a crude way of putting it, but you have a good point there.
